If you want your site to get to the top of the search engine results pages, there’s a lot of work you have to do. There’s all the work to be done on your pages, all the content that needs to be written, all the links that need to be brought in. Contrary to how it may seem when you first consider SEO, though, the most important work you can do is to get to know the other people in your industry and develop connections.
1. Through your own comments sections. This is one area many site owners overlook, with the exception of bloggers. Blog writers know the value of responding to comments because experience has taught them that this is one way to solidify relationships. When someone leaves a comment on your site, they are indicating that they want to pursue a relationship. In responding to their comment, you begin to build that relationship. This can pay off in terms of return site users and industry networking.
2. Industry forums. It should go without saying that industry forums are a great place to meet industry people. Think about an industry conference in the real world, only it’s happening all the time. Participation on these forums can also get you a good reputation throughout the industry.
3. Through the comments sections of others. The comments sections of industry blogs are a bountiful place for networking, as regular comment posters tend to end up in conversation with each other. A whole mini-network can be discovered on every popular blog.
4. Newsgroups. Newsgroups are now a little old-fashioned, but still popular. The advantage of a newsgroup is that it usually only attracts dedicated members, meaning that the people you meet are more likely to be of use to you.
5. Article hosting sites. Any industry that has a lively article posting routine is bound to have one or two main article hosting sites. These might be general article hosting sites, which house articles from all sorts of areas, or they might be specific to your industry. The latter is more useful to you in networking terms for your SEO. Central article sites tend to attract a fair amount of conversation, making them a great place to network.
6. Social networking. Social networking is The Place To Be at the moment, and search engine optimisation experts are very much into social networking for SEO. Talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about how to use social media networks for your search engine optimisation plan.
Something to note about social networking, though, is that it can be difficult for newcomers. Try to build up a network in social media slowly.
7. Direct contact. This can be the most difficult of approaches, particularly if you haven’t got a reputation in your industry. When making direct contact with someone who can help your site, remember to make it all about them. No-one likes having a stranger come up to them and make demands. Think about what you can offer.
