When a business wants to optimise its website so that it is ranked highly in the search results of the main search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo! and so that more traffic visits the site, there are many different SEO techniques to consider that may be able to help it do this. A number of these techniques are black hat SEO methods and this means that they are unethical and aim to manipulate and trick the search engine web crawlers in some way. Whilst most online businesses are aware of these black hat SEO techniques and try to avoid them, there are some websites that still choose to use them.
The main reason for companies turning to black hat SEO methods is because many of these techniques can produce impressive results quickly and with little effort. One common unethical SEO method used by companies is keyword stuffing which is where as many keywords are included in the content of the website as possible and often these keywords are not actually relevant to what is within the web pages of the website. Hiding content within the web pages is another black hat technique that is often used by scammers in order to get ranked for keywords that are not actually appropriate for the real content of the website. Doorway pages are also created in order to get traffic for a certain search term and then automatically direct this traffic to a web page that is completely different. All of these techniques are frowned upon by the search engines and websites will be punished if they are found to be using SEO methods like this.
Different search engines have different ways of dealing with websites that are recognised to be using black hat methods. However, the common punishment when any black hat SEO technique is identified is for the ranking of the website to be dropped significantly. This can of course be disastrous for a business with a drastic reduction in traffic and sales likely. However, websites can be penalised even more severely. When it is deemed appropriate, a search engine will ban a website from being ranked in their search results at all. This is of course the worst punishment a business can receive and one that could damage their future success significantly.
If a website is banned from a search engine it can cost them a lot of time and money. If the business wants to be ranked by the search engine again it is vital that the reasons for the banning of the website in the first place are sorted out. It is necessary to make any appropriate changes to your website and then appeal to the search engine. It can take a considerable amount of time for a website that has been banned to be included in the search results of a search engine again.
