The ideal domain

When you’re first starting out on the net, the range of options available make it almost impossible to make a decision. From choosing the web hosting service to use, to selecting the right range of elements to feature on your web pages, preparing a new site can be an immense and fiendishly complicated task.

At the beginning of this complicated series of tasks is the selection of a domain. The domain of your site has a huge effect on your search engine optimisation. A good domain can save you a lot of work. Pretty much for this reason, selecting the right domain can be next to impossible. The ideal domain might be completely unobtainable to the average site owner, but even so, knowing what would be ideal can help you decide on a compromise.

The ideal domain will be:

  • Several years old – Many search engine optimisation experts believe that a domain that has been established for several years is more trusted by the search engines. Much like you’re more likely to trust someone you’ve known for years over a complete stranger, the search engines seem to prefer established domains. This may sound like a strange requirement for setting up a new site, but domains, like real estate, are often sold.
  • Completely reputable – An older domain isn’t going to be of much use unless it has a clean history. To go back to the example before, you’re more likely to trust someone you’ve known for years, as long as your knowledge of them is as someone who is trustworthy.
  • Already related to your industry – Although this is not essential with an older domain, acquiring an existing domain that relates to your industry can mean that some of its old ranking power can be passed on to your site. As you can imagine, this comes in quite handy when establishing a new site. You can talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia about how ranking power can be passed on.
  • Full of popular keywords – A domain name that already has your keywords is invaluable. It embeds SEO into the very foundations of your site. An exact-match domain name, such as www.trees.com for an arborist, is the absolute ideal.
  • Easy to remember – This has less to do with SEO than with your target site users. Having a catchy domain name increases the likelihood of type-in traffic. This can mean that your other online marketing efforts, such as website advertising, are a little more successful. Having an address that’s easy to remember makes it easier for your target users to find you.
  • Related to your locality – Possessing a country-specific domain is an advantage when you want to appear in local search.

Put all of these elements together, and you’ve got the ideal domain. This wouldn’t guarantee a top spot in the SERPs, but it would give you a running start. Of course, the ideal domain is rare. Looking for some of these qualities when you’re researching domains gives your site a good SEO start.
