The importance of tag lines

A good tag line can be a huge support for a website. It can engage internet users, it can express the site’s personality and, most important of all, it sums up the site. Although a site can cope without a tag line, it’s such an easy thing to add to your site that it’s worth the effort. Your tag line is probably one of the areas you want to look at during SEO.

As your tag line will appear on every page, it’s important to devote some time to its composition. You can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about the right tag line for your site. The tag line will affect your site in at least two ways:

1. They’re important for SEO. Tag lines occupy some prime real estate on your pages, so you need to make use of them. Ideally, a tag line will include your main keyword, but this can be tricky. Many companies spend a lot of time in the market research stages coming up with an appropriate tag for their website. They are naturally reluctant to change this just because an SEO agency says they have to. Another problem is if your SEO strategy changes, as it will over time.

The importance of a tag line for SEO changes depending on the strength of your campaign in other areas. If your domain name contains your main keywords, your tag line isn’t quite as important in website optimisation terms.

To be truthful, tag lines require just as much compromise as any other part of SEO. It’s not going to be hugely detrimental to your business to change your tag line every so often, so adapting it for your search engine optimisation campaign can be a good idea. Equally, although your tag line occupies a good space for keywords, it’s not going to sink your campaign if you’ve just spent thousands coming up with the perfect one.

2. They’re important for your business. Long before most businesses thought about SEO, before the term had even been coined, tag lines were considered an important part of a site. That’s because they help to describe the whole site, giving internet users something to latch on to in those first few seconds when they’re making a decision whether to stay or not.

What to look for in a tag line

There are several avenues you can take with your tag line. What you end up with will depend on the personality of your business. Humorous tag lines are often successful because they immediately engage the reader, and they can be used for all types of business. Inspirational tag lines are another option.

The things you need to think about include:

  • Personality – what sort of impression do you want to give?
  • Purpose – what does your site offer to the average internet user?
  • Brevity – tag lines should be as short as possible.

The tag line of your website distils everything about your business. It’s not an easy thing to compose, so don’t be afraid to discuss options with others.
