There are many different techniques involved in search engine optimisation and different factors that are deemed important and of significance by different webmasters. H1 tags are one of the commonly agreed upon factors that can affect the search engine optimisation campaign of a website and how the website is ranked in the search results of the major search engines.

H1 tags are the headers that are featured at the top of web pages within a website and are the tags that are generally accepted to have the biggest influence in search engine optimisation. H1 tags are one of the first parts of a web page that can indicate the subject of the content within the web page to the search engines when they are indexing and ranking pages within a site. Therefore, H1 tags play a significant role in the search engines identifying a website as relevant and appropriate for a search query when a search term is entered by a search engine user. H1 tags need to be relevant and created thoughtfully and carefully so opportunities of having the website displayed to the target audience of the business are not lost. Whist H1 tags alone will not improve the ranking of a website, when used appropriately with other SEO techniques they can be significant.

H1 tags are the perfect place for keywords to be distributed but as always when dealing with keywords, ensure that they are used appropriately and that the text makes sense. Dividing the content of a web page into different, smaller sections and giving each section a different header is a beneficial way of getting more headers and more keywords present in the content of your website. Not only will this be advantageous for a business because of the way the search engine web crawlers operate and retrieve information, but also because it will provide visitors to the website with more structure and therefore it will be easier for them to explore the website thoroughly. Different areas of interest can be highlighted easily for visitors in this way and this means they can identify and read the content that is necessary for their wants and needs.

However, overuse of header tags and keywords in search engine optimisation is not recommended as this can actually have a negative result on the way a website is ranked by the search engines. The web crawlers used by search engines can detect if techniques like this have been used by a website and will treat it at a disadvantage. As with any part of SEO, carrying out the technique ethically and genuinely will help the search engines to view your website favourably.

H1 tags are just one part of search engine optimisation that can make a big difference in a search engine optimisation campaign. In order for H1 tags to play their role successfully, other on page and off page SEO methods must also be used appropriately by the company.
