You can’t read much about search engine optimisation without realising how important links are to SEO. You also can’t avoid the conclusion that a good link profile is damnably hard to build. Even experienced SEO experts struggle at times with the multiple demands a link profile must meet.

There are some things that need to be remembered when it comes to link building. You can discuss your plans with us at SEO Consult Australia. Getting the link is not the end of the work you have to do. You also have to ensure that it’s going to do the work for your site that you need it to do.

Remember link anchor text

Every link coming into your site will have a hyperlink out there somewhere. Many site owners are aware that the link anchors on their own pages are important, but forget the importance of link anchor text when it’s off site. This might be because they think anchor text for inbound links is beyond their control. This is not necessarily true.

It’s always worth trying to control the anchor text for your inbound links. Many of the best links come from a relationship that has been built up between a site’s owner and the link provider. There are times when you can use that relationship to influence, if not completely control, the way your links are presented. When you can, suggest that your link is embedded in text containing your keywords. It never hurts to try.

Allow time for link building

A good SEO plan should contain plans for building your link profile, but you should also look to the long term for links. The best kind of link profile is one that builds up over time. The reason for this is how the search engines view a link profile.

It’s startling how similar the search engines treat link profiles and site profiles. When the search engines look at a link profile, they are looking for much the same range of credibility factors that they use to judge pages. In other words, they’re looking at relevance, which is indicated by the presence of keywords, credibility, which is indicated by the background factors of the linking page, history, and freshness. They also look at the speed with which the profile was built, as this can be a sign of spam. When you look at potential links, think about how the search engines are going to view them.

Make sure your links are live

The other thing that many site owners overlook is the fact that links change while you’re not looking. Sites change page addresses or shut down completely without warning. This results in broken links, which are frustrating to search engines and internet users alike.

It’s vital to check through your link profile every so often to ensure that all of your links are live. Incorporating this into your SEO maintenance plan ensures that all of the links connected to your site always work as they should, or at least aren’t broken for very long.
