If you are not sure whether you are practicing White Hat techniques or not many search engines provide a list of guidelines that should be read.  Yet this may still not explain ethical vs. good practice.  White Hat is considered unethical.  It takes a little common sense and a concentrated effort to stay away from Black Hat or unethical practices.  White Hat offers a good road to long term successful SEO as well as maintaining a good relationship with search engines.

Successful SEO can only be achieved by employing white hat techniques.  White hat techniques provide long term and consistent results as they follow the guidelines set down by search engines.  There are no short cuts to SEO and practices that employ trying to trick a search engine will get you either pushed off the road or pushed way back.

Content and White Hat

Content is what gets the attention of readers and for this reason it is vital that it is beneficial for all involved.   When it comes to creating webpage content it is about ensuring that what your readers see is exactly the same as that being seen by search engine spiders.  Anything that is not considered White Hat involves risk.  You could get banned from a search engines list or get severely penalised.

If you use any technique that tries to hide text or anything else that tries to trick search engine spiders into ranking your site higher, this will harm your site in the long run.

Popular White Hat Techniques

Presenting unique and informative content is high on the list as it is able to attract humans and spiders.  Building natural links from reliable and reputable sources is also important.  There are other methods to consider too, such as creating a blog.  Contribute to forums or submit articles to various sites, or RSS feeds. Create backlinks and crate a sitemap.

Confusion surrounding White Hat techniques

It is good to understand that even though search engines offer guidelines on good techniques; their statements can at times be vague.  There isn’t a clear definition for white hat techniques set in stone or objective anchors that define activities. SEO is still considered a new industry and as a result definitions are being corrected, tweaked and straightened out all the time.

There is at times a great deal of fear surrounding what does or doesn’t constitute good SEO techniques.  Search engines may not always offer enough clarity to clear up the confusion in their guidelines.  In this instance the only way to conduct good SEO is to play it safe.  Unethical SEO practices may produce quick results, but they are short lived.  What one should fear the most though is incurring the displeasure of a search engine.  If you do you are writing your own death warrant as far as SEO goes.  It is just not worth it.  Without White Hat techniques successful SEO would be impossible, keep that in the back of your mind at all times.
