The two thought-traps of SEO

Search engine optimisation is an unusual discipline. Compared to its slick marketing cousins, SEO is awkward and clumsy. It involves a large amount of technical knowledge, but at the same time requires a light, creative touch. New things come up all the time, but experience is important. It can be hard to get your head around.

There are two particular traps of thought for business owners who are new to SEO. Most companies that choose to invest in the services of a search engine optimization consultant do so because they view SEO as part of their marketing plan. This is absolutely correct. SEO should come under your marketing budget. At the same time, lumping SEO in with marketing leads to the expectation that optimization will be completed swiftly and that once it’s done, the client can rest and relax. Neither of these things are true.

SEO breaks customer service rules

In most other businesses, speedy service and satisfaction in the long-term effect of a process is a given. Lack of either would result in a great amount of customer dissatisfaction, which is something that complicates the SEO process. The best optimization plan is one that takes place gradually, and is maintained in the long term. It’s understandable, though, that businesses fall into these traps.

It’s important to know the real damage these two thought traps can do to your website if you let them affect your optimization campaign.

1. Speedy service. The desire for speedy service, or impatience to call it by another name, often causes a bit of confusion for businesses when they first begin optimization. This is particularly true for any business coming from a marketing mindset. Businesses naturally come to expect that all marketing processes have an ‘a + b = c’ kind of path, in which a certain amount of resources ensures a fairly predictable outcome on a predictable schedule.

Where this becomes dangerous for SEO is when businesses try to implement every possible optimization technique at the beginning of their campaign. The reason SEO pros recommend that sites take their time implementing SEO is because search engines react badly to rapid change. Sites that suddenly have all the right factors may be suspected of spam and booted off the index. Impatience can land your site in a worse place than you started.

Businesses that use optimization services are likely to avoid this trap, and you can discuss this with us at SEO Consult Australia.

2. Satisfaction. The second dangerous point is when businesses are satisfied with the results they achieve through optimization. SEO requires maintenance, constant little touches to ensure that your site stays on top of the rankings. Without a good maintenance plan, the effects of initial optimization are very short-term.

Businesses make the mistake of thinking that SEO is like a house renovation. In many ways, optimizing your site is like renovation, but on an ever-shifting building. The conditions surrounding your site are ever-changing, and it’s vital that you work to keep up with them.
