Keywords or keyword phrases are the crucial diamond dust that helps SEO campaigns become successful.  All a search engine does is to act as a middle man between those searching for something and those providing it.  Search engines have no say in what keywords are best for site and they offer up no advice about whether or not you are using the right ones, this only becomes apparent with constant monitoring and comparisons.

Tools for finding keywords

  1. Guessing and Brainstorming is free and sometimes works, in fact understanding what people want is not really rocket science.  IT does help to have an analytic tool embedded in your design as this tool can help you tell if what you guessed is right by showing how much traffic you are generating.  It is not scientific but if all you need is for some backup, it is great.  It also won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
  2. Analytic Data mining follows from your analytic tool and it is a good way to get data on general search volumes as it shows data that caused in a visit to your site.  From this data mining exercise you can tell what the top ten keywords were used that got traffic to your site and it allows you to plot your position in a search engine for each every one of these keywords.  You may be surprised at how well you are doing but also give you the opportunity to change your keywords in order to get better rankings.
  3. Use the host of free keyword tools available on the internet which will give you search volumes and which suggest alternatives.  They wont give you information on how effective keywords are or how competitive they are but I you take their suggestions about which keywords to use and the search for page with those keywords you should get a good idea of how well they could help with your optimising.
  4. Use traditional advertising methods such as radio or magazines and even TV to help generate your keywords.  Make use of the ones that trigger response and grab attention.  You can test these keywords for search volume just as you can in point 3 above.  A word of advice, don’t reject keywords just because they don’t have high search volumes.
  5. Ask your friends, colleagues and family because this will give you a better idea on who people think when using a keyword.  You might find some diamonds this way.

Keyword researching is vital and you need to spend whatever time is needed and throw whatever tools you can find at it. The rewards are enormous and are easily quantified so that if one doesn’t work it is easy to tweak it and change it.  Sooner or later you will find what you are looking for and when you do, exploit it to your advantage.  Your SEO campaign is only as good as the research, time and effort you put into it.
