Those forgotten Alt tags

Alternative tags, known as Alt Tags have been around for a long time, they aren’t new. Originally, the alt tags were designed to contain text that would be displayed on web pages if the internet user’s computer could not display images [the specification]. In the early years of the internet, it was not uncommon for computers to not have the capacity to display images. Obviously today it is rare for a computer not to have this capability.

Thus, the alt tags have been relegated to the dusty attic by many web designers as they feel it is no longer important.  In reality it is a rather significant mistake to not include alt tags with images. The reason being that alt tags are keywords. You are thus throwing a golden keyword insertion opportunity away. Including alt tags with all images, having each alt tag descriptive keyword unique, you give that web page a positive boost for being found in the search engines for that keyword.

Internal linking helper

You can help your internal site keyword linking with the alt tag. If alt tags contain keywords similar in context to the page that the specific image is, linking to it alerts the search engines. They then consider that the page you are linking to have greater value than they normally would deem it to be if it had no alt tags contained in the link. Your alt tag is telling the search engines to visit that page as it contains text information relevant to the alt tag.

Entrance paths

If you want your website to be highly successful, you have to create as many different doorways into your website as possible. Adding an alt tag to every image you use on your website you are in reality creating entryways. Search engines have Image Search and your alt tags are what make your website images show up in Image Search. No website can neglect this invaluable opportunity by not using alt tags with all images.

With each alt tag added to an image, you have another chance to show up in search results through Image Search. All the top search engines use Image Search. Each time the keyword in your alt tag is searched, a search will list your website. Your website is listed because of the search phrase used in your image alt tag and image name.

People with sight disabilities

Your alt tags not only appeal to the search engines where your images are concerned. There is another way in which alt tags are a great benefit. People with sight disabilities use specific software to help them when they cannot see images clearly.

When you add alt tags to images, software used by sight-disabled people provides valuable information about the image. This makes your website accessible to sight disabled users. This can be clearly seen that alt tags should never be seen as unimportant and should never be left off. Alt tags are a great part of your overall site optimisation efforts and should be maintained.
