There is a huge amount of information about search engine optimisation available from a selection of sources and the reliability of these sources can vary considerably. An important part of SEO is reading what others have to say and how others use SEO techniques to achieve better results, but a problem occurs when inaccurate and misleading information is read by those that are not experienced in SEO. There are certainly many myths about SEO currently in circulation and unfortunately these myths can result in site owners that are new to the topic of SEO having unrealistic expectations with regards to the type of results that can be attained.

One of the most popular common myths about search engine optimisation is that high rankings in the search results can be achieved quickly and easily by using a search engine optimisation campaign. Whilst a professional SEO campaign will be designed to help you to improve your rankings so you can gain exposure for your brand and direct relevant web traffic to the pages of your website, this is not a quick or easy result to achieve. A number of variables affect rankings. Rankings regularly change as the search engines develop new technology and change the algorithms they use, more websites are launched and competitors also begin running SEO campaigns. SEO can help your business to improve its rankings, but this will not be a quick and easy process.

A number of those that are new to search engine optimisation view it as a quick fix solution to their problems and unfortunately this is not the case. A common myth is that SEO can be used for a short amount of time and then SEO efforts can then be ceased whilst results will remain impressive. This is not true.  Search engine optimisation is a long term process and SEO techniques must be continuously used and adapted within the changing search environment if your business is to remain competitive in the years to come. It is often the case that businesses use SEO to obtain high rankings and increase traffic and then stop SEO. If they do so, their rankings drop and the amount of traffic that visits their sites decreases greatly. SEO can take a considerable amount of time and should be used for as long as you want your business to be successful.

Another common myth that often deters site owners from becoming involved in search engine optimisation is that all SEO techniques are technical and require special expertise in order to be carried out effectively. This is not actually the case. It is likely that a wide range of SEO methods will be required within your SEO campaign and a large portion of these will not be technically based.
