Twitter is a social networking website that has really been gaining in popularity in recent months. Many internet users now visit the website regularly in order to post their own updates and to follow the updates of others. Twitter is being used for social purposes, entertainment purposes and also by businesses that are developing their brand online and trying to increase the amount of traffic that visits their websites. Twitter can be an effective tool in a search engine optimisation campaign if used appropriately.

Twitter is already available in English and Japanese but has followers from all over the world. This means that many Twitter users already post updates in their languages even though a translation process for the language is not currently provided by the Twitter service. The use of Twitter by internet users from countries all over the world shows just how big and powerful this website has become and the massive audience it has captured.

Twitter has now announced that it will be enabling its website for a further four languages. French, German, Spanish and Italian will now be languages that are officially accepted by the Twitter website and are languages which will be translated so Twitter users from many different countries can communicate more easily. Twitter is asking for volunteers to offer their translation services. Twitter will provide these users with a simple language tool that will help them to offer translation suggestions and information in order for the development of the website with these new languages to take place. Despite the great success of the business, Twitter wants to encourage Twitter users to offer their assistance and input free of charge in order for this development to take place quickly and successfully. Once volunteers have made suggestions and offerings to the Twitter website, thorough technical research will then be carried out to ensure accuracy.

Twitter is already popular in many different countries and offering support in more languages will increase this popularity further. It will make it easier for internet users in countries which don’t speak English to interact and communicate and this means that the potential target audiences for businesses will be increased further too. If a business is selling products or services to countries around the world, the business will be able to appeal to potential customers and inform them about their business and what they have to offer. This development from Twitter can be viewed as advantageous for those involved in search engine optimisation as could affect the amount of traffic from other countries. Twitter can be useful for a business and enabling Twitter for more and more languages will mean that more and more users can be targeted by using Twitter as an SEO tool.
