Watch out for link penalties

Links are a part of life when you SEO your site. Without links, you can’t hope for a decent ranking. Getting links to your site is a complicated process, and it takes a lot of work. Links are commonly what takes a site from way back in the search engine results pages to the top 20. Links are one of the most common causes of search engine penalties as well.

If you’re in doubt about any links for your site, it’s a good idea to talk to a search engine optimisation consultant. Linking is one of the areas that businesses often stumble into trouble, because the guidelines from Google and the other search engines are so unhelpful. When your main guideline is ‘natural links are best’, it can be easy to get confused.

Here are some of the link moves that commonly get sites into trouble:

  • Linking to bad websites. This is something you should avoid if you’re concentrating your energies on inbound links. It’s difficult to get into any trouble through someone who links to you. Linking to others, however, makes you vulnerable. You should research anyone you link to very carefully, and remove links to sites that have been banned by Google. Talk to our experts at SEO Consult Australia about how linking to and from your site can effect your search engine optimisation.
  • Link swapping. This can sometimes get you into trouble, particularly if you have swapped a link with a bad site, as noted above. Google also sometimes takes issue with sites organising link swaps when the links don’t benefit site users. Link swap schemes can also get you into trouble if they are a part of a broader link farming scheme. Google recommends that any reciprocal links be avoided, but most SEO pros recommend that you just research your links with utmost care.

Some links just aren’t worth swapping. If, for example, you arrange a link swap with a company that has no relation to your industry, their link back to you will be of limited value. Relevant links are the ones that aid your site’s search engine optimization.

  • Linking from self-owned sites. You might think it only natural to make use of your existing resources by linking from your own sites, but this is another form of linking that Google frowns upon. Links from the same or similar IPs tend to be devalued. Site owners who deliberately set up networks of links between their own sites have been known to be penalised heavily.
  • Participating in a link farm. This is another move that can result in a heavy penalty. Link farming puts your site at risk because you pass links on from your own pages as well as receiving links.
  • Buying links. This is a method that is still approved by a lot of SEO companies, but evidence has been building up that paid links are not good for a site. Google has dropped hints that paid links will be completely devalued in future, and the search engine has already begun penalising link sellers.
