One thing some site owners struggle with is their own appeal. Business sites in particular suffer from this. When trying to get content together, they spend ages looking for interesting topics because the ones dearest to their own hearts… well, they don’t seem very interesting.
There is a secret that these site owners don’t know about: everything can be interesting on the internet.
No matter what your topic is, there is going to be someone out there who needs to know the information you provide. You could be running a site on snail breeding, the history of the toothbrush, or even dry, technical topics. The potential for a sizeable audience is out there.
The success of the search engine optimisation industry is a good example of this. SEO is an incredibly dry topic, and when most companies began operations, there was only a very small awareness of the industry. SEO experts managed to build up the knowledge of the topic using down-to-earth analogies, helpful advice and a genuine desire to share information. This friendly approach gradually built up the profile of SEO as an industry, and built the profiles of individual search engine optimization experts.
The two elements of success
This doesn’t mean that any topic is going to be automatically fascinating. To get your audience interested, you need at least two things:
- Confidence
- Correct information
The first point is very important. Any writer will tell you that if you approach a topic with the knowledge that it is boring, you will write a boring article. If, however, you approach it with the confidence that there is something interesting to say, you’ll be amazed at how interesting you can be. Back this up with a thorough knowledge of your subject, and you could be an internet superstar.
The final part of the equation is the niche nature of ‘boring’ topics. If everyone else considers your topic a boring subject, they won’t be flocking to cover it. If you manage to cover your topic with authority, you could attract a more sizeable chunk of traffic than someone who is competing in the more popular topics. Branching out
A further key to success is to know the limitations of your topic. If you’re an online doorknob retailer, there is obviously a limited audience for your articles on doorknobs. There’s also a limited amount of information you can present. Exploring related topics, however, will not only provide you with more material, but open your site out to a broader audience.
Going too far in the other direction
There is an opposite danger of assuming that your content will be interesting to others just because it’s interesting to you. The above advice doesn’t advocate this approach. Some attempt must be made to reach the minds of your readers.
True passion for a subject is always interesting. Combine that with a desire to communicate with your site’s users, and you’re on to a good thing. Trust in the attraction of your site’s content.
