As search engines now consider so many factors when determining the ranking of websites in their search results, there are more and more techniques webmasters can try and carry out in order to help improve their ranking within these results. Some of these techniques have been around since the development of search engines in the mid 1990’s and some are new due to the technological developments still taking place.

Within these techniques, there are two different approaches concerning SEO techniques. There is white hat SEO and black hat SEO. Search engine developers view these different types of search engine optimisation techniques very differently.

White hat techniques are encouraged by the search engines and are viewed as a positive and fair way for websites to improve their ranking in search engine results. Those that practice white hat SEO adhere to the guidelines of the search engines and do not try to manipulate or deceive them in any way in order to have their website ranked in a better position. The content the webmaster says is present in their web pages is the content that is actually present on the website and therefore the user is receiving relevant and useful information. Some suggest that those involved in white hat SEO create the content in their web pages for the users themselves and not for the search engines but that they also make this content accessible for the spiders or crawlers that operate for the search engines, meaning that their websites are also easy for the users to find. White hat techniques in search engine optimisation are generally regarded as producing lasting results in terms of the ranking of a website in search engine results rather than immediate but short success.

Search engines do not encourage the use of black hat search engine optimisation techniques and are constantly looking for new ways to avoid them. Black hat methods are often based on deception and do not have the priority of providing the search engine user with relevant and helpful search results. Black hat SEO often includes techniques such as hiding text within web pages or the cloaking of web pages meaning that a different page will be displayed depending on whether a search engine or human is visiting the website. However, search engines do look out for this type of behaviour and will punish offending companies appropriately by reducing their rankings substantially or even banning them from the search engine. Many of those involved in black hat SEO are aware of these risks when they begin using these methods but are keen to improve their ranking immediately and so go ahead regardless.

Professional companies like SEO Consult can help you understand and carry out ethical and successful search engine optimisation. SEO Consult use a number of different white hat SEO techniques in order to work with the client and the search engines to give both success. These techniques help to improve the ranking of websites in search engine results and also ensure that the search engines are providing their users with relevant information.
