Having a website without SEO is like being a bird without wings, it looks and sounds like a bird but it can’t fly!

SEO has gone from obscurity to being the online marketing front runner in only a few short years, but what does it mean to the average business website owner?

What it means is that they have a website nobody can see.  No matter how much time and money they spend on creating, tweaking and maintaining it, what good is it if nobody sees it and it doesn’t generate business.  It has to generate traffic, not just any traffic though; it must generate the right traffic, people who will help their conversion rate.

Online Marketing Approaches

In order to get your site noticed enough to generate business you have to pay attention to all the various online marketing methods such as SEO, PPA and PPC, or Search Engine Optimisation, Pay Per Action and Pay Per Click.  Each one represents a different approach to online marketing.

It is possible to leave out PPC and PPA and concentrate on SEO instead, and in order to do it correctly you need to learn as much as you can about SEO together with its constantly changing rules as well as the search engines constantly changing algorithms and policies, for this reason it is often left to the experts.  It is also very important to familiarise yourself with any technique deemed by search engines as being unacceptable as you don’t want to shoot yourself in the foot before you start, even if done in ignorance.

Content and keywords

SEO goes far and way beyond keywords, your entire content has to be of such high quality that it tempts and entices visitors to your site and engages them once there.  You cannot afford to have static content; else your site will grow stale pretty quickly.  Search engines like dynamic sites, and will overlook static ones, so you will end up never achieving high rankings, if any at all.  Some search engines also respond more favourable to site that offer their visitor’s forums or areas where they can post and discuss various topics.

Keywords are vital and research into the right ones is vital because search engines rank keywords differently for each industry and for this reason some keywords are more difficult to rank, another reason that some keywords are difficult to rank is because of the sheer volume of the site that use the same ones.  One just has to enter a common word on a search page and see how many million sites come up.

It can’t be half-hearted

One cannot approach online marketing in a half-hearted way, you will fail.  SEO is for the patient, but the rewards, if you stick to it using solid SEO techniques, are enormous and worth every penny.  You need to decide how you want your business to succeed and what traffic you need to get there, once done you can steer your SEO campaign in that direction.

You can’t fly it you don’t have wings.
