It may sound like an oxymoron, but SEO content needs to read naturally. Although SEO content is by definition content that has been fiddled with to have greater appeal to the search engines, it is important to consider the needs of your human readers as well. Clumsy SEO content can end up doing your site much more harm than good.
Badly-written content for search engine optimisation can end up looking like one of two things. It can either look like an advertisement, making the internet user suspect that they’ve stumbled onto a spam site, or it can simply look like bad writing. Neither outcome is something the average site owner wants.
Example 1: the advertisement effect
If the keyword in question is something like ‘Wordsworth’s Wonderful Widgets’, there is going to be a certain amount of difficulty in slotting it in to otherwise neutral content. However, some writers have trouble with keywords simply because they’re clunky.
‘When people look for free alternative holiday housing advice, they’re likely to look online. Instead of searching endlessly, they should subscribe to a good free alternative holiday housing advice provider, just like the one you’ll find on our pages.’
Because ‘free alternative holiday housing advice’ is a long-tail keyword, it needs to be used carefully, and not too frequently.
Example 2: just plain bad
Some writers simply jam their keywords in anywhere, resulting in a piece that looks like it’s been written by a machine.
‘Finding good ballet shoe is difficult. When you’re looking for a bargain, it seems all ballet shoe are off sale. One good way to find bargain ballet shoe is to look online.’
In this example, the writer has ignored basic English because the keyword they’ve been given is singular, not plural, but a single ballet shoe is hard to write about. Once you know what bad content looks like, it’s easier to spot when you’re walking down the wrong path.
How to achieve natural content
The key to a good piece of content is just to relax. Lots of new internet writers spend a lot of time fretting over where to put the keywords required for a piece, and this results in stilted, over-worked content. The best thing to do is to relax into the content you are writing, and let the keywords flow in naturally.
If you’re nervous about content writing, one good idea is to have a list of your keywords visible beside you as you write. This keeps them in the back of your mind as you compose, and enables you to gently work them in. It’s important to remember that no piece of content works well with keywords crammed in all over the place. If the keyword doesn’t fit naturally into the sentence, leave it and find another opportunity.
