Google wants to offer its users a quick and efficient search service and the issue of speed is often commented upon. Searchers want to find relevant and useful information as quickly as possible and therefore if Google wants to provide a high quality search service, it must not only provide users with search results quickly but these search results must be relevant and useful and these websites must also be able to be accessed quickly. How long it takes a website to load can affect the search experience of the users and reflect on Google.

Speed is definitely a key issue for Google at the moment and it is highly likely that the loading time of websites in the future will be a ranking factor in the search results. Google is the most popular and successful search engine in the world and so something like this can make an enormous difference to businesses on an international basis.

The main issue for many businesses concerning the issue of speed and search results being affected by speed is that they will not be able to compete with the major corporations. Small businesses may suffer and be pushed out of the search results even if currently being ranked highly, because they are not able to load as quickly as the big corporation websites that are able to pay for expensive hosting.

The development of speed becoming a ranking factor could also affect different areas of the world and the businesses and websites within these areas negatively. Many countries do not have access to high speed connections and the latest internet technology and therefore businesses within these areas could be pushed out of search results too.

It also poses a threat to those websites that feature content that require a little longer to load such as sites based on video. Websites like this could also suffer a drop in rankings if they cannot decrease their loading time.

These are just a few of the main issues internet users and site owners are concerned about when discussing the possible implementation of speed as a factor in search engine rankings. Google is concerned about the issue of speed and will undoubtedly introduce it as a ranking feature in the future but how this will work exactly and what it will mean for online businesses of all different sizes is as yet unclear. Firms who specialise in delivering tailored SEO solutions cannot afford to be left behind by any significant shifts in the manner in which any major search engines behave.

Hasn’t Google (via Matt Cutts) backed-off the importance of load time? I thought the latest word was that it was a minor ranking factor – something to consider (image sizes, server speed, etc.) – but not enough to redesign a site or sacrifice crucial content.

True, but as an SEO company we have always strived to minimise page load times, as the end goal is always for users, not search engines.

If a site loads faster, then that is better for users and therefore should be part of the relevancy score in Google’s rankings.
