Real-time search results is a major issue for the popular search engines at the moment as they strive to provide their users with this kind of information in an effective way. Developments in technology and deals made between companies is meaning that the search engines can offer searchers this type of service and this is likely to develop further in the future.

Google is now including real-time search results in the listings it provides searchers with when a search query is placed. Google has made a deal with Twitter so can include Tweets in its search results and is also including updates from other websites that feature real-time information such as Facebook and other sources like this. Google is hoping that the addition of real-time search results to its service will provide its users with a more efficient and productive search experience.

Yahoo! is also attempting to include real-time search results in the information it provides. Yahoo! will also be using Tweets but does not currently have a formal agreement with Twitter so will not be doing this in the same way that Google is. Tweets will be displayed at the bottom of the results provided by Yahoo! when a search is carried out. This information will not be real-time exactly as Tweets are not displayed as they are created but this is an attempt by Yahoo! to offer this kind of information using its own technology. For the moment, it will only be Tweets that Yahoo! displays to its searchers.

Microsoft has also displayed its interest in social networking websites and the providing of real-time search results. Microsoft is already involved in formal agreements with both Facebook and Twitter but the results of these agreements cannot yet fully be seen through the way Bing is currently operating. Bing does provide its users with a service where they can search Twitter, but this is separate to the normal search service Bing provides and the results of these two types of searches are not combined. Some Tweets are displayed in the Bing results but again these are not updated as regularly as Tweets are created and so once again are only real-time to some extent. It is likely that Bing will be revealing a new real-time search effort in the near future which will be based on its deals with the social networking websites.

The search engines working with the social networking websites in order to provide users with the information gathered in online communities like this, once again highlights the importance of social networking websites in search.
