MSN has revealed it’s freshly updated and redesigned new portal and the changes it has made have been receiving a lot of praise. A redesign of this scale has not taken place in at least ten years and so is grabbing the attention of many users. The aim of this redesign seems to have been to tidy up the layout provided by MSN so that information is presented more clearly and simply.

The highly popular social networking websites are now included in the MSN page so users of these websites can have quick and easy access to all of their information. Video plays a more significant role in the new MSN and local information such as weather, news and restaurant reviews is also readily available. Search is emphasized with the new layout and this is no surprise due to the influence MSN has over users of the Bing search engine. It has been found that around 45% of the search queries carried out using Bing actually come from MSN users. Around 600 million users from all over the world regularly visit the MSN website and this can therefore be extremely beneficial for Bing too.

Yahoo also recently carried out a major redesign but a big difference between what Yahoo and what MSN has done is personalisation. Yahoo is encouraging a more personalised service as it is believed that this is something that Yahoo users want. Providing them with options to personalise their web page have now been given and it is possible for them to have a personalised Yahoo service. MSN has not embraced this idea of personalisation so positively. While it is acknowledged by MSN that providing users with local information of interest depending on where they are situated and their previous behaviour is important and is to be included in their technology, obvious personalised applications will not yet be provided.

These changes to MSN are taking place all over the world, but when the changes are implemented will vary from location to location. Not only will when the new MSN portal vary depending on country, but the changes made to the portal will also vary too. Depending on the location of the user, the MSN page displayed will be different; the precise changes will be determined by specific factors between diverse countries.

MSN and Yahoo have now carried out major redesigns and these changes are being widely regarded as positive and useful for users. The new MSN is viewed by many as a simpler and more efficient version of what users were previously offered and this means it is likely that this redesign will be viewed as a success. If this is the case, this will likely be hugely influential for Bing as more users will mean a greater chance of these MSN users becoming Bing searchers too. It is therefore highly relevant to current search engine optimisation campaigns.
