The success of social networks within our culture today is well known, recognised and understood, even by those who may not be involved in this type of interaction themselves. More and more social networking websites are being developed and more and more internet users are joining them for a number and variety of reasons. Many internet users use websites like My Space and Facebook in order to communicate and catch up with old friends and many users have been reunited with others that they have not had contact with for many years due to them joining websites like this.

Some users join these websites to make new friends and some like to share information with others. However, these are not the only reasons that many internet users are being attracted to websites like this. It has also become apparent that social networking sites can also have a big influence on businesses and their online presence. The amount of traffic a website receives and the ranking it is given within the major search engines can all be affected by the social networking websites.

The type of media that is popular on these social networking websites is varied. Text, audio samples, images and videos are all currently used meaning that audiences can be reached in a number of ways and some of these methods can have a bigger and longer lasting impact on the user.

By giving the users of social networking websites interesting and genuine material in one of these forms, those that have visited the web page are more likely to visit the page regularly and therefore the chance of them becoming a customer one day is increased. It is also now common that internet users will bookmark web pages that they have visited and liked. This means the details of the web pages are stored and the page can be visited easily over and over again.

Communities of potential customers can be formed like this. The building of links is an important part of any search engine optimisation campaign and if others choose to link to your web pages from their websites or blogs, it can be very beneficial. Having relevant links from your social networking pages and blogs to the relevant pages within your website can also be advantageous in encouraging the search engine crawlers to visit your website.

Of course, in order to ensure that users of the social networking website will be interested in the information you are providing and will therefore return again and again and also possibly link to you, the content given on your web page must be appropriate. No matter what media form the information is given in, it must be created for the target audience and must not seem like it is specifically for the search engines. The use of keywords is very important but when necessary and appropriate only.

Social networking websites are currently playing an important role in search engine optimisation and at SEO Consult we like to help our clients understand this and how exactly this technique can help them. We are constantly researching and applying methods to help improve the ranking of websites in search engines by using social networking websites that are currently available.
