When you look at search engine optimization you may think that it only has to do with you and your website, and your optimizer of course. However, optimization goes far beyond that, it has a social side to it too. Think, for a moment, about the core reason optimization is around. Yes, it is there to promote search engine visibility and fairness among websites.

However, there is another more important reason for search engine optimization. That reason is to provide internet users with what they are looking for, to provide them with value. Optimization aims to allow searchers to come across valuable websites that offer them the information that they are looking for first.

As they go through the search pages the value and relevance of the websites on offer degenerates. That is why there are not many instances of people looking at websites on the second, third and other pages of the search results. They know that the best websites that have the most value to offer are on the very first page.

Using users to your benefit

Internet users offer you the benefit of web traffic as well as the possibility of generating a profit from them if you run an e-commerce website. However, they have far more to offer you than just that. Internet users are the reason optimization continues so strongly, but they are also a part of your optimization. Say what? Yes, internet users can be used as an important part of your optimization efforts. But how? The answer is really very simple, social networking and visitor participation.

Social networks and your optimization

Social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace are brilliant platforms to promote your website on. They also provide you with excellent exposure as well as valuable back link opportunities. This is how it all works. When you create a profile for your website or your business on these social media websites, you link to your website from there.

Everyone who sees your profile and likes it follows the link to your website. Thus traffic is generated (+1 point for SEO) and a quality inbound link is created (+ another point for SEO). Another plus about social networking websites is that they spread thee word like a wildfire. Once someone likes your website, they show it to their network of friends who like it. Those friends then show your profile to their own networks of friends and the cycle goes on perpetuating itself.

Get them to participate

Web crawlers and search engines simply love user generated content on a website. Encourage your users to leave comments on your blog, in a comment section of your website and in many other ways. Each time new user generated content is added, the crawlers make a bee line for your website to check it out and increase your rank. User article submission, forums and podcasts are also great for user generated content on your website. And whatever you do, do not neglect or forget about social media bookmarking applications for your website. They are an absolute must.
