Alternate your anchor text

The search engines build their algorithms to act as much like internet users as possible. This means that they’re built to detect faults and flaws in every search engine optimization plan. One flaw that most site owners overlook is using the same anchor text for every link.

The text used to anchor a link, any link, weighs in heavily in the value of that link. For example, if you manage to get 20 decent-quality links but all of them are anchored with ‘www.dongles.com’, those links will have limited value. Most sites try to get their links anchored with a phrase including their keywords, such as ‘best quality dongles’. The trouble is, if every one of those 20 links is anchored with this one keyword, they look like a machine has put them there.

It’s a good idea to alternate your anchor text wherever you can. Instead of ‘best quality dongles’ try for ‘dongles of the best quality’ or other reworks of the keyword. Once you run out of these options, try linking with one of your related keywords. Mix it up.

Don’t be rigid with your SEO

There is a big part of SEO that is technical. Sometimes, the part of SEO that’s creative is what gets you the rankings. It’s important to know when to adhere strictly to tactics, and when to let it go.

For example, it doesn’t take much to spot keywords. They often stand out awkwardly in text. Site owners who have read all the advice about highlighting keywords make them stand out even more. The overall effect of this is clumsy, and will equally put off users and search engines.

The usual SEO advice should not be taken as hard-and-fast rules. Yes, it’s a good idea to highlight your keywords by putting them in bold or using them as anchor text, but doing this with every single keyword on your page makes your content look spammy. It’s great to get your keywords in two or three times a page, but doing this every time for every keyword forms a recognisable pattern.
