How to fine-tune your content in 5 easy steps

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

One problem a lot of site owners come across is keeping their content on track. It’s difficult enough assembling content to provide a site with a constant feed. Add to this the burden of making that content interesting, provoking, optimised and focussed and the task becomes enormous.

There are some very simple steps you can take to fine-tune your approach to content that will help your SEO, and help relieve some of that heavy burden. One of the simplest, of course, is to leave it all in the hands of your SEO company, and you can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about content provision services. Not every business can take this path, however, so here are some other, equally simple steps to follow:

  1. Pick a central topic. Having a central topic helps you in at least two ways. First of all, it helps with content planning if you know which particular planet you’re orbiting around. Having a focus is more inspiring than having the world to choose from. Second, it helps establish your position in the eyes of internet users. A site with focus can easily become a resource in its field. It doesn’t matter if you wander off this topic for three out of four of your posts, and sub-topics are a great thing to explore.
  2. Get your titles right. Your title is possibly the most important part of your content. Think of titles as a reader’s call to action. It’s easy to get caught up in the search engine optimisation ideal of titles, namely those using keywords. Sometimes, a catchy title is more important. Find a process that works for writing titles, or get a professional in, or your content doesn’t have a chance of being read.
  3. Use images wisely. Most of the advice in the SEO industry seems to steer people away from using images, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use them at all. Images really brighten up content, and blog readers are particularly used to them. Don’t forget to use the alt text and captions of your images for search engine optimisation.
  4. Make the most of your home page. Your home page is the place to advertise fresh content. Making the most of your home page doesn’t mean that you should push everything you possibly can. On the contrary. The best use of your home page is to selectively advertise your fresh content, with some of your business messages woven in as well. Look at the home pages that most attract you, and the more popular sites in your industry, when you’re after inspiration.
  5. Use your links! Internal links are a great way to get more of your content read. When an internet user reads your great new article on puppy rearing, they’re likely to be interested in related articles. Hyperlinking through to older articles is doing your readers a favour as well as helping your SEO. It goes without saying that the best hyperlinks are those using the keywords of the linked page.

Link attraction in 5 easy steps

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Link attraction is usually a matter of good content, but content doesn’t just leap off people’s pages. It might seem that successful bloggers or information sites just happen to have their content promoted everywhere, but this is no accident. Smart site owners find ways of promoting their content to attract links.

The internet is a vast sea of content, and your little pages are only a small part of it. This is true whether you’re operating a 100-page site, or a 10,000-page site. Each page really stands alone, and your content is not likely to attract links unless you find a way to promote it.

Getting your content to the point where it attracts links on its own takes a little bit of work. You can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about the kind of content that attracts links. Here’s a step by step guide to honing your content’s presentation and enhancing its availability to increase its chances of enhancing links.

  1. Prep the content itself. The content that is going to fly off your pages has certain qualities such as timeliness and a certain style in its formatting. There is a fair amount of advice out there on the qualities of magnetic content, and a little research should provide you with some good ideas. For content to travel, however, it requires a slightly different appearance. Pictures are certainly an aid in catching the reader’s eye, as is clear text and a concise message in the title. Look at the popular articles on sites like Digg for formatting tips.
  2. Pave the way. Think about the number of times you’ve bothered to forward an interesting article or flag a good video. Chances are, you haven’t had to go to much trouble to do so. If readers have to highlight text to forward it, they probably won’t bother. Embed ‘email this’ and other handy links.
  3. Advertise. This doesn’t mean taking out a search advertisement to promote just one page of your site. Rather, it means doing what all successful bloggers do, namely commenting in forums and on other blogs and linking back to relevant posts on their own blog. The advantage of this is that you establish yourself more firmly as a helpful participant in your industry, seed links, and promote your content all in one simple step.
  4. Push. It’s sometimes good to be pushy, and such is certainly the case when it comes to attracting inbound links through content. Make it clear to your site’s users that you would appreciate links back to your pieces. Sometimes all you have to do is ask.
  5. Make the most out of it. If you do succeed in enticing your users to share content, you should make the most out of the situation. Supplying linking sites with tags and hyperlinks means that you retain control over how your link is presented, an enormous advantage when it comes to your search engine optimisation. Very few site owners will go to the trouble of rewriting your tags if you’ve supplied them.
