Will Bing replace Google on the iPhone?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

The Bing search engine has been developed to offer internet users an alternative option to Google. Google currently dominates the search environment and is the most popular search engine in the world. Microsoft has developed Bing to take on the mighty Google and is trying to gain any advantage possible that can help it to gain market share and be a success.

The iPhone is extremely popular at the moment with many users worldwide. Google is currently the default search engine on the iPhone and this means that once again Google is receiving a large amount of the search traffic. All of the users of the iPhone (and this is a considerable number) are currently directed to Google as their search engine and this has undoubtedly increased Google’s share of the mobile search market. However, reports are now suggesting that Apple is in talks with Microsoft and that Bing may become the replacement default search engine on the iPhone.

This could be a massive accomplishment for Microsoft and could help Bing to significantly increase its user numbers. Due to the immense popularity of the iPhone, anything associated with it, including its default search engine, is also highly likely to increase in popularity too.

It is highly likely that Apple is considering using Bing instead of Google because of the development of the Nexus One mobile phone by Google. This phone is being viewed as a major competitor for the iPhone and so of course Apple will not be viewing Google favourably at the moment and may feel betrayed and threatened by this expansion of Google into the mobile market. The obvious next step for Apple is therefore to turn to a competitor of Google and to encourage users to use this search engine instead.

Apple and Microsoft remain competitors in some markets but a deal like this could be advantageous for both companies and could be a disappointing development for Google. If this deal goes ahead then Apple will demonstrate effectively its opinion on Google and the development of its Nexus One phone and show that it is going to compete strongly to ensure that this new phone does not overshadow the iPhone. The deal would also be beneficial for Microsoft because it will likely increase its user numbers and help Bing to increase its portion within the mobile search market.
