Five things to make your site more attractive to both humans and spiders

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

In a very simplistic way it is easy to optimise your site.  You need to find keywords for your site that match the words people type in on a search engine.  Spiders then crawl the content on your site and send searchers to you because what you have on your site is relevant to what they are looking for.

This is the theory anyway, it gets trickier in the execution, like how do you get a spider to crawl your site and how do you know what people will be typing into the search engine.

Anyone who has ever done research on keyword will be the first to tell you that this is the way to go if you want to know what people are typing into search engines in order to find your site, there are other things you can do as well which will go a long way to helping you optimise your site in order to attract not only humans but also spiders to your site.

Social

This pertains to either Social Media optimisation sites or Social Book marking.  Social Media optimisation sites entails finding sites and then creating a profile together with content relevant to your niche market.  These sites can provide both backlinks and an audience interested in your product or service, but this also depends on their terms of service.  Be careful of spamming these sites though.

Social book marking on the other hand entails creating backlinks for your site from these sites.  Users put links on these sites back to your content, but you have to make sue that the content you provide is interesting and of a high quality.  Traffic from these sites can be unreliable and they have different rules, so what you get back may vary.

Distribution

It is a good idea to distribute videos or pictures as a means to getting people and search engines to come see your site but you have to make sure that the quality video is of very high quality and provide value to the viewer, so make sure that they are relevant to your content.

Distributing pictures carries the same rules as videos, but if you are distributing photographs you have to make sure that you own the right to distribute them, don’t plagiarise or  you will get into trouble with more than the search engine and may be in danger of infringing copyright laws.

Writing and distributing articles is another valuable method for showing off your knowledge and get traffic and spiders to come to your site.  Each article submission site has their own sets of rules and guidelines so make sure you comply with them before your submit content.

Link Building and forums

All your links must contain your keywords; some site will allow text links while some won’t.  Whatever you decide make sure that you review the terms and rules of the site you are linking to so that you don’t run up against their guidelines.

When your site feels stale – start reinventing

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Your website is your internet marketing tool. The internet is a powerful place to market your business or company, as long as you get it right. And even if you get it right you cannot just sit back and enjoy the ride. You need to constantly see that you are still attracting visitors. When you start to see a drop in your traffic then you need to investigate as to why that is.

A drop in web traffic usually means that visitors are losing interest. It also means that you are starting to slip down in the rankings on the search results pages. It is time to come up with something fresh to give your visitors reason to pop in and the search engines reason to like you.

Get interactive

When you want to look at reinventing your website you need to think about all the tools that have been developed since you last did anything to your website. Look at tools that you can add to make the browsing experience more enjoyable and easier for your visitors. Including interactive browsing features will invite your visitors to say and have a look around.

Every now and then you should consider redesigning or remodelling your website’s interactive tools. Adding something fresh on a regular basis tells your customers that you care about your website and their traffic. It tells them that you are incrementing change to keep them happy and not just letting things stagnate after you initially grabbed their attention.

Kingly content management

Everybody who knows anything about SEO will know the concept of “content is king”, some of us might even be tired of having it thrown at us around every SEO corner. But the truth remains that content really is all that important to your website. So when you think things need to be shaken up a bit, why not shake your content management up. This works especially well if your website content is continually updated.

Perhaps change the type of pages you are using from HTML to something more change-friendly like Java script. Changing the type of pages you use could also open doors to more interactivity with visitors. Anything that changes for the benefit of the visitors to your website is always worth a try.

Be more attractive

When women want to get noticed they dress up, change their hair, revamp their wardrobe and put on makeup. You need to do the same for your website. Dress it up so that it looks fresh and new. Change your graphics and their tags regularly. Maybe dabble around with a new colour scheme or add more pages. Simply refreshing your pictures and graphics might fool the web crawlers into thinking its new, but that certainly won’t work for the humans.

Redesigning might cost you some money, but then you need to remember one little saying: it takes money to make money. Put some money into revamping your look and you could see some nice returns in the form of returning customers and new ones. Don’t be afraid of change because if you stay safe and go stale you are going to lose out on your potential to succeed.
