Don’t be dumb with bad SEO

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Being penalised is a reality when you SEO. Sometimes, you can overstep a line without knowing it. Often, you won’t realise what you’ve done wrong until well after the penalty has been imposed. Sometimes, however, a site gets penalised simply because the owner has been, frankly, dumb.

The most common reasons for penalties haven’t really changed in the last five years, yet people keep on being penalised. You would think that with all of the research that goes into what search engines like and dislike, sites would be able to avoid penalties fairly easily. This assumes that just because the average site can avoid a penalty, they will. A lot of site owners out there are simply making some very dumb mistakes.

Basic bad SEO is still a problem

One of the continuing problems faced by many sites is bad methods of search engine optimisation. Generally, if you’re using a reputable search engine optimisation company, you can avoid these mistakes. Many businesses run into error when they strike out on their own, and some run into a less than reputable SEO company.

When you first look into optimisation companies, it’s worthwhile spending time and researching. Find out what the industry opinion is of the company you’re considering, and ask some pertinent questions before you sign on. It’s also a good idea to check out any sites they have performed work on.

Hiding links is not a good idea

Despite it being a technique years out of date, link cloaking is still very much present on the net. Reputable search engine optimization companies haven’t tried this technique for years. Even disreputable companies have given it up. That doesn’t stop the odd site giving the technique a go.

The difficulty with this technique is that while it might make links invisible to internet users, it’s entirely obvious to a search engine. All of the details of your links, including size, are in your code. You will get caught.

Automatic redirects are bad news

Setting up a page so that it automatically redirects a user to an entirely different page is an old spam standby. Internet users don’t appreciate being hijacked in this way, and neither do the search engines.

If you need to redirect users to a new version of a page, use a 301 or 302 code, and make sure that the new page’s content isn’t too dissimilar from the old. Using meta refresh tags or other forms of automated redirect can result in penalties.

Made-for-AdSense pages

None of the search engines favour sites with low-quality content. Google seems to take particular issue with sites made specifically for AdSense. Even if AdSense revenue is the ultimate goal of your site, it pays to post quality, original content. Users are more likely to stay on site this way.

Pay attention to Google’s guidelines

It is vital that the search engine guidelines are followed, at least roughly, when you perform search engine optimization. The search engines publish a lot of material on how to optimise properly. Read it. If you have questions, ask your SEO consultant.

Use your search behaviour to help you shape your SEO campaign

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

When running an online business, you need to get internet users to notice you and visit your website. The best way to gain exposure and traffic is by running a search engine optimisation campaign. It is advisable to work with SEO specialists when developing an SEO campaign as they have the knowledge and skills required to do this effectively. However, business owners can play a role in their SEO too. SEO specialists working on your campaign will be able to advise you on which techniques you can use personally to help your business improve its results.

A business owner can add a great deal to their SEO campaign themselves when using SEO techniques chosen for them. They can do this by using their own experiences, knowledge and ideas.

If you are trying to increase the amount of traffic visiting your website by obtaining top rankings in the search results, then how internet users search and what they look for must be considered. It is necessary to look at search from the perspective of your target audience so you can communicate effectively with them through the SEO methods you use. The best way to begin thinking like a searcher is to consider how you search for something online.

Consider the search engines you choose to use for different searches and the type of keywords and search terms you enter. Also, think about the results you click on first, what you look for immediately on a website you visit and how you decide if it is suitable for your needs or not. By thinking about what is important to you when you are carrying out an online search, it will help you to think of what your potential customers are also looking for. When you know this, you can use this information within your search engine optimisation campaign. It will enable you to use your SEO techniques more effectively and therefore achieve better results.

Detaching yourself from your business and considering search from the point of a searcher can be a useful way of exploring what searchers want and need. Doing this can help you to make your website more suitable for them in the future and help you to run a more successful SEO campaign.

When working with search engine optimisation specialists on your SEO campaign, it is important you listen carefully to what they tell you and take on board the advice they offer. Your SEO consultants will explain which SEO techniques you should use and how you should be using them. However, you also need to explore SEO for yourself in order to use these SEO techniques successfully. Learn as much information about SEO as you can and consider it from your own point of view to help you to apply it accordingly.

We at SEO Consult can provide you with valuable information and tips which can help you to work productively alongside us on the search engine optimisation campaign of your business.
