SEO is about more than just your site

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

A few years ago in search engine optimisation, you could talk about a website and a search engine and safely cover everything. It was all about getting internet users from point A – search engines – to point B – your site. These days, not only are there more search engines in the mix, there are more ways of accessing search engines. There are many, many paths to your web pages, and you need to think about all of them when you SEO.

Nothing has ever really operated in straight lines on the internet, but search used to be a fairly straightforward proposition. People would go to the search engines to find information, click on the likeliest looking site, and that would be it. These days, people still do that, but they also check out the YouTube videos on the subject, ask their contacts in social networks and see what people are saying in their favourite forums.

To ensure a high click rate, and a low bounce rate, for your site, you need to cover all of the new angles that have popped up, and you can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about this. In your search engine optimisation plan, don’t just ask how to get internet users from Google’s listings and on to your pages. Ask:
*Where else have they seen you?
*Can they reach you in multiple ways?
*Are you as visible as your competitors?
Most importantly, ask yourself if you have all your bases covered. Only broad coverage leads to success.

3 tips for freshness

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Freshness has become a watchword within SEO circles over the past couple of years. There once was a time when a site could get by with an update every couple of months, maybe less. Now, sites need constant updates to succeed, and part of that updating system has to be fresh content.

Google has been making significant moves to improve its treatment of fresh content, meaning that it’s getting even tougher for sites that don’t update regularly. If you’re after ideas to keep your content fresh, here are just three of the easy ways to keep up:

*News. Not many businesses would picture themselves as news organisations, but it’s easy enough to do. Create a news column on your main pages and keep it updated with items you come across. Product launches, company news and even mainstream news that pertains to your industry are all great news ideas.

*A social blog. While it’s important to provide engaging, informative content for your site users, it’s not always feasible to invest in that kind of content on a large scale. Supplement your search engine optimisation content plan by starting a blog, one that links in with your social media campaign. You can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about this.

*Use your users. This is an old trick, but still a good one. Opening up your comments section or allowing reviews are great ways of keeping pages updated without having to put much effort in. If you want your main pages to stay fresh, this can be the answer.
