Google providing real-time search results using information gathered from social networking websites such as Twitter is an exciting development for searchers and also for businesses using Twitter as part of their search engine optimisation campaign. Those sharing information on Twitter can now have this content displayed on the first page of the Google search results and this means the potential for a massive amount of exposure for their business and a substantial increase in traffic too.

Many Twitter users are now considering how Google ranks tweets and what they can do to help increase the chances of Google ranking their tweets in a top spot when a relevant search is carried out by a Google user. Google has revealed some interesting information about how it is ranking Tweets within its real-time search results section.

What Google says is of great significance for achieving a ranking in the real-time search results is the number of followers a Twitter user has. The more followers you have, the more likely your content is to be ranked by Google as relevant. This is based on the assumption that those Twitter users that have a large number of followers must create interesting posts of information that are enjoyed by others and are useful too. These Twitter users are viewed as authorities within the Twitter community and therefore will be increasingly likely to have their information displayed.

It can also be beneficial for Twitter users that want their results in Google to follow others that have a large number of followers. By being established and having an association to others that appear respectable and popular within the Twitter community it can also reflect positively on you and once again will encourage Google to view your posts of containing something interesting and appropriate.

In standard search, Google uses links when ranking websites and this is a similar technique that Google is using to sort through Twitter posts. Google categorises websites and Twitter users by those they are linked to and those they have a connection with. Those that are linked to high quality sites and those that are connected to popular followers will be more likely to be successful because of this association.

Many Twitter users are hoping to have their business posts displayed in Google when a relevant search query is placed and it is possible to help make this a reality by following some simple guidelines provided by Google and also Twitter. However, how useful this result will actually be is being questioned by some because these real-time results are only relevant for a short amount of time. If running an SEO campaign, it is recommended by some to focus time and attention on gaining a top spot in the standard search results provided by Google.
